kdf_333's blog

yeah maybe one day i'll write enough book reviews for a blog but not now.

I use my Shelafri account(http://www.shelfari.com/kdf_333) more for keeping track of the books i've read or want to read. i use Goodreads ( https://www.goodreads.com/kdf_333) more for social networking because a lot of my coworkers use it. I just found out about this site and decided to give it a whirl.

I am an average book loving gal. i love to read fiction. I love mysteries, romance, certain sci-fi, and certain YA. I work at my public library (since 2006) doing a variety of things. I also work at a dress store part time to pay for my addiction of clothes & accessories. From middle school to my first year in college i worked in my school libraries. i only got paid in college. i have to yearly purge my collection of books and get rid of the ones i know i will not read. i keep most of my nonfiction Christian growth books or biographies, and reference material. i also keep my trivia books or personality quiz type books.

that is all for now.

We Stand On Guard #1

We Stand On Guard #1 - Brian K. Vaughan, Steve Skroce i liked them a lot, a lot. although if C.had not told me it was about a long war between the USA and Canada i would have been lost.

Ms. Marvel Vol. 4: Last Days

Ms. Marvel Vol. 4: Last Days - Marvel Comics So i reread Ms. Marvel, Vol. 3: Crushed. i liked it a lot. and i did forget some key plot points so glad for the reread.

Ms. Marvel, Vol. 4: Last Dayshad a lot of crossover issues. Spider-man and Captain Marvel. granted vol 3 had Loki and the Agents of Shield. the difference is the crossover comics in vol 3 i didn't feel lik had to know the background of Loki and the Agents of Shield in order to enjoy the story. Versus vol4 wher ei felt like i was missing an important plot point because i didn't know their stories.

to me this SCREAMS publisher marketing ploy to sell more comics knowing that Ms. Marvel has drawn in new comic book readers, a lot who don't normally read superhero comics (like me!) or who are new to the who idea of reading GN's and comic books.

the stories were interesting but it did annoy me. the reason i don't read superhero comics is because of all the mythology and background you have to know in order to fully understand what's going on. if Ms.Marvel is going to be that connected to the rest of Marvel universe i may not continue reading the series. i'll just look at the movies like i do with the rest of the superhero comic book characters.

The Julius House

The Julius House - Charlaine Harris i don't really like Aurora. she bores me or irritates me. i just don't like her as a person. i am on the third book and i keep reading the series cuz i like the town and some of the other characters and the lil mysteries. plus Aurora keeps changing so i keep hoping she'll change so i like her.

A Bone to Pick

A Bone to Pick - Charlaine Harris i don't really like Aurora. she bores me or irritates me. i just don't like her as a person. i am on the third book and i keep reading the series cuz i like the town and some of the other characters and the lil mysteries. plus Aurora keeps changing so i keep hoping she'll change so i like her.

Orphan Black Volume 1 (Orphan Black Tp)

Orphan Black Volume 1 (Orphan Black Tp) - Graeme Manson, Jody Houser, John Fawcett Really 2 1/2 stars.
I love the TV show (thanks for the rec, Tess!)so i wanted to read the comic. i hoped it would be mainly about the minor characters but it's not. it still focused on the clones.

the art was good and the story was written by the tv show writers so it was excellent of course. if i hadn't seen the show i would have been lost.

they didn't do a good job of distinguishing past and present IMO, esp in the first 2 issues Sara & Helena.

although i did like the additional backstories, i didn't see any of that info in the show and i am up to season 3. maybe they mention some of it in season 4. it just makes me wonder if the backstories will tie into the show. i am especially wondering about Rachel's

Unlimited Memory: How to Use Advanced Learning Strategies to Learn Faster, Remember More and be More Produ (Mental Mastery) - Kevin Horsley now to implement the strategies.

Paper Girls #1

Paper Girls #1 - Cliff Chiang, Matt Wilson, Brian K. Vaughan i like it but i am not blown away and panting for the next issue. it gives me a Goonies vibe so i think it will be an enjoyable series.i did feel like i missed something though when i started it like i was in the middle of a story instead of the beginning.

i really liked the paper boy guild letter section. they sounded like real letters but then i was like this is issue #1 where would they get fan letters from already?

Rocket Raccon, Vol. 1: A Chasing Tale

Rocket Raccon, Vol. 1: A Chasing Tale - Skottie Young currently reading Rocket Raccon, Vol. 1: A Chasing Tale will probably finish it tonight and start on vol 2 Rocket Raccoon, Vol. 2: Storytailer. i'm not liking them that much. i didn't like the GoG movie very much either. i don't normally like the superhero comics but i do like the movies and GoG movie is not in my top 10 of awesome superhero movies. my fave character is Groot and he is not much of a conversationalist. ;-)

Rocket Raccoon Vol. 2: Storytailer

Rocket Raccoon Vol. 2: Storytailer - Marvel Comics currently reading Rocket Raccon, Vol. 1: A Chasing Tale will probably finish it tonight and start on vol 2 Rocket Raccoon, Vol. 2: Storytailer. i'm not liking them that much. i didn't like the GoG movie very much either. i don't normally like the superhero comics but i do like the movies and GoG movie is not in my top 10 of awesome superhero movies. my fave character is Groot and he is not much of a conversationalist. ;-)

Midnight Angel

Midnight Angel - Lisa Kleypas i must say lord Stokehurst ANNOYED me. I was like Alicia- he was supposed to be safe, a haven, a protector not an arrogant bully who pouts when he doesn't get what he wants. I know in romances they fall in love in a day but i just didn't trust him. the fact he kept being his arrogant self after they were married but then would later apologize made it believable but..eh i still didn't trust him or like him.

oh and the age difference kinda made me squirm but only when he was trying to seduce her and she was clearly saying no and pushing him back and he wasn't budging. no rape but it still made me squirm.

i shall read the next in the series and see if the man is just as annoying or squirm inducing. if so i will give up on Lisa Kleypas.

Phonogram: The Immaterial Girl #1

Phonogram: The Immaterial Girl #1 - Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Matt Wilson completely lost me and not even interesting.

We Stand On Guard #2

We Stand On Guard #2 - Brian K. Vaughan, Steve Skroce i liked them a lot, a lot. although if C.had not told me it was about a long war between the USA and Canada i would have been lost.

The Adventures of Captain Underpants

The Adventures of Captain Underpants - Dav Pilkey a funny lil book. it's definitely elementary and young middle schoolers type of humor.

Dancing at Midnight

Dancing at Midnight - Julia Quinn this book said the man, lord john had seen the horrors of war and was injured in body and soul. when he had the flashback about the war i was not expecting child rape. and i was not expecting the graphic details of said rape to be repeated in the book 2 more times after that in his nightmares. THAT MADE ME MAD.
i was even more mad since Quinn penned a note in the book talking about it and her process of writing it since it is one of her earliest works. i was mad she didn't put a warning in her note. also i fail to see how a MAN who witnesses a child rape would so blame himself for not preventing said rape that he fears he will become a rapist or something like that. there are plenty of horrors about war. ones that could have affected him more directly than this and scarred his soul more so. i am mad she chose rape. i mad she chose to write about it in detail. i am mad it was a child. and i am mad it was repeated. so many other horrors of war that give soldiers PTSD. why in a romance novel would you choose rape?

other than that it was a typical Quinn funny romance. you can definitely tell it is one of her earlier works though.

Brighter Than the Sun

Brighter Than the Sun - Julia Quinn yay! another funny romance and no rapey or abusive scenes. oh, i did so miss historical romance. so glad this author was recommended to me.

A Snicker of Magic

A Snicker of Magic - Natalie Lloyd so good. the writing is lyrical. i think that's what you call prose that reads like poetry, right? and i loved the characters and the mythology so very much. love is magic. that pretty much sums up the whole book.
